How to develop or improve a Project Management Office (PMO)

Program and Project Management Offices (PMOs) come in many styles. In some cases, they simply provide training, and or perhaps some recommended tools or templates. In most cases, they are the project delivery process owner, and in some cases they have full project authority and accountability. Whichever PMO style you desire, our approach to help you deliver integrates Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) from the beginning.

We often start with an assessment of your project delivery process, pinpointing the processes and behaviors that are likely to rapidly improve success in your organization. We focus on deploying agile solutions that match your company and customer needs, including deploying Lean thinking to reduce waste in all of your project related processes. We consider CCPM a major tool to implement key lean concepts including the value, value stream, project flow, pull, and perfection.

Why it makes sense to start with CCPM.

Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) is a new paradigm for effective project management. CCPM synthesizes the best features of conventional project management, Six Sigma and Lean Thinking, and critical chain schedule development, execution, and control. It has demonstrated success for a wide variety of project types. Typical results include:

  • Project Managers have much more time.
  • Project Managers have a clear focus.
  • Projects always get done before the scheduled end date.
  • Projects usually get done in about half the total lead time.
  • Projects cost is reduced; sometimes substantially.
  • Project full scope is delivered.

CCPM specifically deploys value stream thinking to increase project flow through a pull approach called pipelining. CCPM works to drastically reduce project time waste due to queuing, desynchronization, Parkinson's law, and the student syndrome.

This new system of project management is described in a useful way in Larry's new book. It provides the nuts and bolts and ties to the existing project management knowledge base for the approach first described by by Dr. Goldratt's book Critical Chain. Critical Chain Project Management provides the necessary links to the Project Management Institute's overall project delivery process, so you can plan and execute successful projects.

Critical Chain Project Management is the first substantive improvement in Project Management in the last forty years. It provides a logistical solution for Project Management with results similar to those that W. Edwards Deming and Eliyahu Goldratt brought to Production. It is the logical way to plan and manage projects. It is so simple and useful. The Project Management Institute just added it to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Guide, Third Edition. Learn it, use it, and leave your competitors behind while you do projects in much less time, for less money, and always deliver scope on schedule.
